JC Legal shortlisted for 3 accolades at ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2021 – Janice Chew hailed finalist of Young Lawyer of the Year
JC Legal makes a mark at the pre-eminent ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2021 organised by Asian Legal Business, being shortlisted for Rising Law Firm of the Year, Transactional Boutique Law Firm of the Year and Dispute Resolution Boutique Law Firm of the Year. The firm’s Principal Janice Chew also entered the finals for Young Lawyer of the Year.

The organiser will announce winners of the ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2021 at the virtual awards ceremony that will take place on 10 September 2021 at 8pm (GMT+8).
Rising Law Firm of the Year
Since 2018, JC Legal has been operating the Startup Steward Programme for small businesses established for not more than three years to avail of professional legal advice covering general corporate needs at transparent monthly rates. The Programme has been highly successful and is featured on HSBC as well as A Plus, official publication of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, JC Legal additionally launched the Virtual Legal Clinic as a lawyer-charity-public tri-sector initiative for people to consult lawyers easily and securely online at a fraction of standard hourly rates. Part of the proceeds is donated to Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre, a registered charity to support cancer patients and their care givers. To date, we have advised on contractual disputes, winding-up, venture capital, data privacy protection, retrenchment and many other issues.
As a legal practice led and run mostly by women, JC Legal champions diversity of all kinds and advises on a pro bono basis charitable organisations that promote, inter alia, LGBTQ and migrant workers’ rights, mother entrepreneurship, mental health and youth development.
Over the years, JC Legal has earned numerous awards for its best practices in community service, modern work and privacy protection. The Rising Law Firm of the Year category is open to law firms established in Hong Kong no earlier than 2012 and have no more than 10 partners as of 30 April 2021. JC Legal is one of two sole proprietorships among finalists of this category.
Transactional Boutique Law Firm of the Year
JC Legal specialises in cross-border commercial transactions with a focus on ASEAN, under the leadership of Hong Kong and Malaysia dual-qualified solicitor Janice Chew. Selected notable cases include advising on a cross-border land sale, and the joint venture between subsidiaries of two listed companies in Hong Kong and Malaysia respectively.
The Transactional Boutique Law Firm of the Year category is open to law firms that specialise in transactional matters with no more than 15 partners as of 30 April 2021. JC Legal is the only sole proprietorship among finalists of this category.
Dispute Resolution Boutique Law Firm of the Year
Trained in commercial litigation, Janice Chew leads the cross-border dispute resolution practice of JC Legal. The firm has advised multinational companies and high-net-worth individuals on complex cross-border litigation and arbitration cases involving Southeast Asian and offshore jurisdictions in the High Court of Hong Kong.
The Dispute Resolution Boutique Law Firm of the Year category is open to law firms that specialise in dispute resolution with no more than 15 partners as of 30 April 2021. JC Legal is the only sole proprietorship among finalists of this category.
Young Lawyer of the Year – Janice Chew
With 14 years of practising experience in Malaysia and Hong Kong, Janice leads the broad practice of JC Legal in cross-border corporate and commercial law, dispute resolution and regulatory compliance. She is a frequent speaker at industry and training events for institutions such as the Consulate General of Malaysia in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Cyberport.
Apart from legal practice, Janice also holds multiple civic duties, including Deputy Chairperson of The Malaysian Association of Hong Kong, Consumer and Enterprise Trade and Services sub-committee leader of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong & Macau), Committee Vice-President of the Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers, and Board Chairperson of Uplifters, a registered charity empowering migrant workers. In 2019, Janice was honoured by Prestige as 40 under 40 in Hong Kong.
The Young Lawyer of the Year category is open to young lawyers who are no more than 40 years of age as of 30 April 2021, with remarkable achievements in the practice of law and significant contribution in the larger community, especially in youth empowerment or similar advocacies. Janice Chew is the only solicitor representing a sole proprietorship in Hong Kong.
